Booking your first Athletic Therapy appointment can feel a little intimidating—especially if you've never seen an Athletic Therapist before. One of the questions I hear most often is:

"What should I expect?"

The short answer? My goal is to help you understand why you're having pain, not just treat the painful area. Whether you're dealing with a running injury, recovering from surgery, struggling with back pain, or trying to get back to soccer, your first appointment is designed to identify the root cause of the problem and create a plan that gets you back to doing what you love.

Step 1: We Start With a Conversation

The first part of your appointment doesn't involve lying on a treatment table. Instead, we'll spend time talking about:

  • Where your symptoms are located

  • How the injury started

  • What activities make it better or worse

  • Your training history

  • Previous injuries

  • Your goals

Sometimes this conversation provides just as much valuable information as the physical assessment.

Step 2: A Movement Assessment

Rather than looking only at the painful body part, I'll assess how your body moves as a whole. Depending on your injury, this may include:

  • Walking or running

  • Squats

  • Single-leg balance

  • Lunges

  • Hopping

  • Sport-specific movements

This helps identify movement patterns that may be contributing to your symptoms. For example, knee pain isn't always caused by the knee itself. Sometimes reduced hip strength, ankle mobility, or poor movement control plays a much bigger role.

Step 3: Strength & Mobility Testing

We'll also look at things like:

  • Joint mobility

  • Muscle strength

  • Flexibility (when appropriate)

  • Balance

  • Coordination

  • Control during movement

The goal isn't to find something that's "wrong." The aim is to understand what your body currently has the capacity to do and where we can help it improve.

Step 4: Hands-On Treatment (When Appropriate)

Many people ask: "Will I get treatment on the first visit?" Yes—most of the time. Depending on your assessment, treatment may include:

  • Manual therapy

  • Soft tissue techniques

  • Joint mobilizations

  • Laser therapy

  • Taping

These techniques can help reduce pain and improve movement, but they are only one part of the rehabilitation process.

Step 5: Exercise Is Usually the Most Important Part

If you've seen me before, you've probably heard me say this: The exercises are what create long-term change. You'll leave your appointment with exercises chosen specifically for you. These aren't random exercises pulled from the internet. Each one has a purpose, whether that's to:

  • Improve strength

  • Increase mobility

  • Build tendon capacity

  • Improve balance

  • Retrain movement patterns

  • Help you return to running or sport

I'll also explain why you're doing each exercise so you understand how it fits into your recovery.

Do I Need to Stop Exercising?

Usually, no. One of the biggest myths in rehabilitation is that pain automatically means complete rest. In many cases, continuing to move—while modifying the amount, intensity, or type of activity—is actually one of the best things you can do. My goal is to help you stay as active as possible while your body recovers.

What Should I Wear?

Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move. Depending on the injury, shorts or athletic clothing can make it easier to assess movement, but they're not required. If you're unsure, just wear something comfortable and we'll work with it.

How Long Will Recovery Take?

This is probably the most common question I get. The honest answer is: It depends. Recovery is influenced by many factors, including:

  • How long you've had the injury

  • Training load

  • Strength

  • Sleep

  • Stress

  • Overall health

  • How consistently you're able to follow your rehabilitation plan

At your first appointment, I'll give you my best estimate based on your assessment and explain what we need to accomplish to help you reach your goals.

My Goal Isn't Just to Get You Out of Pain

Pain relief is important—but it's only part of the picture. Whether you're training for a marathon, chasing your kids around the backyard, playing soccer on weekends, or simply wanting to walk without discomfort, my goal is to help you build the strength and confidence to keep doing the activities you love. That means looking beyond the painful area, understanding why the injury happened, and creating a plan that's tailored specifically to you.
