Plyometric Training for Runners and Athletes: Benefits, Injury Prevention & How to Get Started

If you've ever watched someone effortlessly sprint, jump, change direction, or even run down a trail, you've witnessed plyometrics in action.

Despite their reputation as an "advanced" training method, plyometric exercises aren't just for elite athletes. When introduced appropriately, they can benefit runners, soccer players, recreational athletes, and anyone who wants to move more efficiently and confidently.

As an Athletic Therapist in Victoria, BC, I frequently incorporate plyometrics into rehabilitation—not just to improve performance, but to help people safely return to the activities they love.

What Are Plyometrics?

Plyometrics are exercises that train your muscles and tendons to produce force quickly.

Think of movements like:

  • Jumping

  • Hopping

  • Bounding

  • Skipping

  • Quick changes of direction

These exercises take advantage of the body's stretch-shortening cycle, where a muscle rapidly lengthens before immediately shortening. This allows your body to store and release elastic energy—much like stretching and releasing a spring.

The result? More efficient movement with less wasted energy.

Why Are Plyometrics Important?

1. They improve running economy

One of the biggest misconceptions is that getting faster only means running more.

Research suggests that plyometric training can improve running economy, meaning you use less energy at a given pace. In practical terms, this means you may be able to run farther or faster without increasing your effort.

For runners, this can be a valuable complement to strength training.

2. They build tendon capacity

Healthy tendons need load.

Exercises such as hopping and jumping help improve the ability of tendons—including the Achilles and patellar tendon—to store and release force efficiently.

This is particularly important for sports involving repetitive running and jumping.

3. They prepare you for real life and sport

Most sports don't happen slowly.

Whether you're:

  • Sprinting for a soccer ball

  • Landing from a rebound

  • Cutting around an opponent

  • Stepping off a curb unexpectedly

...your body needs to absorb and produce force quickly.

Traditional strength training is essential, but it doesn't completely prepare your body for these high-speed demands.

Plyometrics bridge that gap.

4. They may reduce injury risk

While no exercise can completely prevent injuries, improving strength, landing mechanics, and force absorption may reduce the stress placed on joints and soft tissues during sport.

For athletes returning from injuries such as ACL reconstruction or ankle sprains, plyometrics are often an important step before returning to unrestricted play.

Common Plyometric Exercises

You don't have to start with box jumps.

In fact, many people benefit from simpler exercises first.

Examples include:

  • Pogo jumps

  • Skipping

  • Lateral hops

  • Single-leg hops

  • Skater jumps

  • Bounding

  • Drop landings

  • Box jumps (when appropriate)

The best exercise depends on your goals, injury history, and current capacity.

When Should You Start Plyometrics?

Not everyone is ready immediately.

Before introducing plyometric exercises, I generally want to see:

  • Good pain control

  • Adequate strength

  • Good balance

  • Quality single-leg control

  • The ability to tolerate lower-level loading

For example, after an ankle sprain or ACL reconstruction, we typically progress from strength exercises to controlled jumping before advancing to sprinting, cutting, and sport-specific drills.

The progression matters more than the exercise itself.

How Often Should You Do Plyometrics?

For most recreational athletes:

  • 1–2 sessions per week is enough.

  • Focus on quality rather than fatigue.

  • Allow at least 48 hours between harder jumping sessions.

  • Stop if your landing quality begins to deteriorate.

Remember, plyometrics are a nervous system exercise as much as they are a muscular one. Fresh, controlled movement is more beneficial than simply accumulating more repetitions.

Are Plyometrics Safe?

Yes—when they're introduced appropriately.

Many people assume jumping is "bad for your knees." In reality, your joints are designed to tolerate impact when they are progressively exposed to it.

The key is gradually increasing the intensity and volume while respecting your current ability.

Starting with hundreds of jumps or advanced box drills is rarely the answer.

Final Thoughts

Plyometrics aren't just about jumping higher.

They're about teaching your body to absorb force, create force quickly, and move efficiently.

Whether your goal is to run farther, return to soccer after an injury, improve your trail running, or simply feel more confident moving, plyometric training can be an important part of your program.

The right exercises—and the right progression—depend on your goals, current fitness, and injury history.
